What is Attachment theory

Attachment theory is based on an experiment conducted by John Bowlby and Mary Ainsworth, which found that a child's experiences with their parent/caregiver form what is called an "attachment style". Your attachment style is the foundation for how you view love and relationships with others and yourself. In other words, your attachment style is the subconscious set of rules you acquired in early childhood on how to form connections. 

 

There are four attachment styles - three insecure and one secure:

  • Securely Attached

  • Anxious Preoccupied

  • Dismissive Avoidant

  • Fearful Avoidant/Disorganized
